Hello Everyone!
My name is Ava Wentworth and this is the first of two blog posts I will be sharing with you guys.
I am originally from New Jersey, where I still currently live outside of attending High Point University in North Carolina. All of my family is based in New Jersey and still reside there. I am very close with my family and I tend to miss them so much more than the average 22 year old college student should! I decided to go out of state for college because I wanted to experience more of the world. I grew up very anxious and sheltered, so I never truly knew what the real world was like outside of my New Jersey bubble. Glad to say, being here in North Carolina has definitely opened my eyes to how the south is (yes, I consider NC the south). I have always loved the warm weather, but I truly am a sucker for the seasons, which I am so happy to still experience in NC. However, I do hate the snow so I am even happier that we do not get to enjoy a lot of that here.
I am the oldest of my siblings, my younger brother just started college this year. It is just the two of us, so growing up we developed a very close connection and I consider him one of my best friends even if I neglect to tell him every detail of my life. With that being said, I am also very close with both of my parents. I love my parents so much and I am lucky enough to be very close with them, so being away at college can sometimes be tough since I am so used to all of us being under the same roof. My brother and I attended the same high school and got lucky enough to have one overlapping year together, which I still reminisce on.
My brother goes to a trade school in Pennsylvania, so he has the privilege to go home whenever he wants to, which is every weekend. Unlike me, his program is only a 1.5 years, so he will only be going to university for a short while. Fortunately, we both graduate at the same time! So, I am excited for us to be under the same roof again, though most likely only for a short time.
Neither of my parents ever went to college. My dad got a trade job right out of high school working for his step-dad at an engineering company, also based out of New Jersey. My mother had dreams of being a nurse and attended schooling for a little while, but realized she would rather stay home and raise her children. Admittedly, I am glad she did so because I was always very attached to my mother and hated when she was not around. Fortunately enough, that was not frequently. My brother and I are three years apart and as I mentioned we are very close. Actually, me and all of my cousins are very close. My mother has two other older sisters and they each have 2 kids and we are all within three years of each other. We are all very close and hang out every weekend when we are all home. My family is heavily Italian so we base most of our values on tradition and family, and that is how I was raised. I would say that shaped my personality the most out of anything I encountered growing up.
As for college, originally, I was not even going to attend. I had the most miserable high school experience and could not fathom putting myself through another four years of school. However, I was just too smart to do that. I love learning and developing new skills, it is one of my many passions. Therefore, I knew I had to go to college. But, I knew it also had to be the perfect college, which is how I wound up here! I am currently a senior, and the time really does fly by so fast. I can safely say college has been the best four years of my life to date and I am sad to see it go, but I am really excited to see what the future has in store for me.
I know I mentioned that I have a few passions just before, and one of them is growth… I am addicted to it. I know that sounds strange, but growing and developing into the person I am supposed to be has been the best thing these last few years. I know a lot of people do not like change because it makes them uncomfortable, but I think we neglect to realize how vital and influential it is. The thing that sucks about change and growth is that most of the time it sucks and it is uncomfortable. I can attest to this; change and growth have never been easy for me but it has been so important. I am very passionate about putting myself in situations that expand my mindset and I am thankful for any wrongdoing that comes my way (after I am done dealing with it of course) because I know I am one step closer to being the best version of myself.
With that being said, I do have a few other passions as well. I love writing, which is why this blog post has been such a joy for me. Ever since I was a kid I loved to write, I kept so many journals and diaries, and I still do! One of my favorite ways to destress and declutter my mind is to journal, and I have quite a few here with me at school. I struggle a lot with anxiety and ever running intrusive thoughts, so being able to physically put my thoughts somewhere helps me tremendously. Because of this anxiety I have always had, I love to find new healthy habits and hobbies to take up that make me feel good! In college, no one ever tells you how difficult it can be to find time for yourself between work, class, and curricular activities. I find that when I get busy, and I constantly am, the first thing to go is always my self-care. I have been working towards incorporating ways to destress and relax more throughout the week so to avoid the inevitable burn out. I like to implement things like walking, working out, cooking, journaling and watching YouTube videos into my daily life in order to feel better.
The biggest thing I am passionate about, and the thing I see the most in my future, is traveling. Even as a child travel was always the first and foremost thing in my mind. I have been to every state on the east coast and I have been out of the country to the Caribbean a few times. But, the next beast I am going to tackle is living abroad. It has always been my dream to live in Italy and see the surrounding areas like France, England, Greece, Norway, Switzerland and Ireland. After I graduate from High Point, I am going to move abroad to Italy and live my dreams of traveling and working. My dream job is anything event management related because my passion lies in planning trips, and I will say I am fairly good at it. Another exciting thing in my future during post-grad life is the trip I am planning with my best friend to tour all of the national parks in a camper! My grandparents own a camper and are graciously letting me borrow it so we can live out our midwest dreams.
Overall, I am so excited for what the future holds for me and I can’t wait to actually start living the life I have been working and manifesting towards the last four years!
